Centurions!
01/06/2010 22:28:00
Sunday’s ride saw us break the 100 mile marker for the first time. Not only did we break the ton but we did it fully kitted up (give or take a sock). We departed Westbury just after 6am and arrived in Bournemouth just before nine (average speed 18.1 MPH). We took the flat route through Salisbury and Ringwood but winds were not always favourable. 105 miles in little over 6 hours was very pleasing and a boost to confidents. I think we have both learnt some valuables lessons from the ride and it has given us plenty of food for thought. We are confident on reflection that any niggles we currently have can be ironed out. Little over 5 weeks to go but I feel we are well on track. This will be the longest training ride we attempt; we now need to turn our focus on back to back rides. -  Ed
Pants!
24/05/2010 12:52:00
Picked up the Boardman Saturday morning, didn't want to take it for a first spin in the wet, but decided to take it on Sundays ride, as I’d heard the weather was going to be good over the weekend .but Sunday morning was grey and threatening rain and as I’d already put my pedals on and set up, still took the Boardman. It felt very strange to begin with, but I soon got into the new position. Met Ed and we were off doing the same loop we'd done the week before but with the addition of an extra section out to Mere and back into Shearwater. Going well and out of longleat we met another cyclist who we chatted with across the deverills. This is when I started to get a niggling pain in my hip, after much stretching and moving my position I decided that my pants were too tight and cutting off my circulation. In order to avoid getting out and back into wet leggings I ripped them off at Shearwater cafe. I’m not sure what the owners would have thought of a ripped pair of shreddies in their bin but it solved the hip ache. The rest of the ride was on and off rain but the Boardman was superb and we ended the day travelling almost 80 miles in 5hours at steady pace. We ended feeling positive about a good training ride and thinking we may actually make it ;-) -  Julian (aka jools da tools)
Changeable!
10/05/2010 22:18:00
It certainly feels like change is in the air. Along with the extremely sad news of Shaun's passing. The weather has gone from very cold to warm and back to cold. I have moved house, ordered the boardman and rides have gone from bad to good. We never thought we'd be in winter gear entering May but thats exactly how our last two rides have been. The first of which came a couple of days after my house move and I probably had great deal to do with me bonking about ten miles from home. Not enough food a week of stress and not enough clothes on a wet windy day contributed to me feeling totally empty and limping the last 10 miles home. What was Ed thinking when he looked back to see me struggling to keep pace behind him at only 40 odd miles "Christ Julian you got to do better than this" maybe?. well I said it was changeable but that didn't include the weather for the next ride, but more clothes, more food and more miles were in order and a little over 60 miles and a climb up Bratton side of the Whitehorse to finish made my last ride on the old Vanquish a good one and must of made Ed feel more confident for the future. Bring on the Boardman and the Big One! -  Julian
RIP Shaun
04/05/2010 23:01:00
It was a very sad day for all connected with the Whitehorse Riders on the 16th April 2010 when founder member Shaun Player lost his battle with kidney cancer. He will be remembered not only for his never give up attitude, before and during his fight against cancer but most of all his friendship. He has been and will continue to be missed on all our rides but is still with us in spirit. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family at this most tragic time. -  Julian

technical trouble!!
10/03/2010 07:52:00
after a few weeks of ill health and bad weather stopped any rides,it was time to get serious. so Ed and I decided 50 miles out on the road was a good second start to training. Up early sunday morning I rode over to Eds. After little more than a mile I had no low gears.when I met Ed we had an inspection the gear cable had become jammed in the lever. We thought best to fix later at home as it's still very cold to be on the side of the road for any amount of time. Ed grabbed his mountain bike and accompanied me as I limped home for mine. 21 miles of hard off road ride later we were home and feeling like it was not a bad substitute for the longer road ride. having some doubts about whether my old bike is up to the job, and it's gearing is a little on the high side for my old legs maybe a compact would be a better option for the Big one. -  Julian
We have broken then £1000 barrier
04/03/2010 21:39:00
Great news – we have just broken the £1000 barrier which means we are over 10% of the way to reaching our mammoth total! Keep your kind donations coming in and we are confident we can make it all the way.

Where is the year going? January and February’s training was a little disrupted by the weather and a few bugs which have been doing the rounds. Now that we are into March the real training begins. The temptation is to get on the bike and and put in some big distances – my fear has always been peaking too soon; we are going for the gradual approach which should see us peak just in time – I will publish our training program shortly for those who are interested.

We are very pleased to have secured generous sponsorship from Express Asphalt, Halfords and SJK Mouldings. We will be working hard over the next couple of months to secure more business sponsorship, before turning to generous individuals to part with their hard earned money.

Remember to keep spreading the word – if you feel you can help in any way please get in touch! If you would like to join us for any stage of the ride we would also love to hear from you!

Margeret (My dear mother in-law) will be hosting a coffee morning on our behalf which is very kind of her – watch this space.

I will keep this entry short as I am sure Julian has plenty to say in his next entry.

Training begins brrr!
27/01/2010 23:26:00
Training began Sunday 23 Jan with a 32 mile ride around Longleat, climbing Heavens Gate which I was very pleased at reaching the summit not feeling too bad after all of the Christmas excesses. We then rode out to the Deverills, through Maiden Bradley before covering the same route home. wish someone had bought me heated socks for Crimbo as neither Ed or I could feel our feet when we got back. It's still very cold brrr! -  Julian
Join the Long Neigh Up
20/01/2010 20:52:00
Well the good news is it looks like we have interest from other cyclists wanting to join us for a few miles along the way. So far we have interest on day 2 and 3. If anyone likes the idea of joining us for a day then please get in touch; all we ask is you raise a few pounds sponsorship from your family, friends and work colleagues and you’’re in. It will be great to get a few new faces on the website too! -  Ed
Long Neigh Up Blog

It was a long way off and anyone you spoke to about it looked at you like it was light years away. Now it's just round the corner and It's me that's a long way off! Ed is up and running, booking flights and accommodation, all in true Ed style! (You could tie an unwilling Yak to his bike and he'd still make it to John 'o' Groats). Personally, my head and body are a bit behind and there's still beer on the side from Christmas. I've turned 40 and feel it! Our last big ride left me slightly depressed and I still haven't fixed the flat. It was cold, I ached and even declined Ed's suggestion of one more climb, just to get home. Can you really get fit doing LEJoG as I've heard people say? I've much work to do, am willing the snow to melt and am in need of endorphins and confidence so I don’t have to find out the hard way. What am I doing? -  Julian
The Home Stretch
12/01/2010 00:00:00
Christmas has long gone and the reality of having hit the home stretch has sunk in – This is where the real hard work starts. My body has been hit with a large dose of adrenalin and in response I have gone into emergency mode. I have list lying all over the place. I think I have everything organised and covered but it doesn’t stop me phoning Julian for reassurance – “it’s going to be alright isn’t it Ju?.....” -  Ed
